ISSUE: JUNE, 2010 One evening this spring, gastroenterologist Lisa Ganjhu, DO, arrived at her New York City hospital and found the staff in a tizzy over a patient. The patient, a woman weighing 485 lb, had been brought to the hospital that afternoon with a large pelvic mass of unknown etiology. The attending physician asked the gastroenterology department to start the investigations with a colonoscopy to rule out colonic lesions. But several staff members didn’t feel comfortable taking care of this patient.
